Amritha Mohan is a media scholar and independent journalist from Kannur, Kerala. Her articles have been published in news outlets such as Mongabay, Newslaundry, Greater Kashmir, NewsMeter among others. She writes on various themes focussing on gender, sports, education and cultures in South Asia. As part of the fellowship, she published a deatiled report on how caste still rules the social lives of Theyyam practioners in Kerala. In the process of reporting, Amritha was helped and mentored by Raksha Kumar and Ashutosh Sharma.

How caste still rules the social lives of Theyyam practitioners in Kerala


Theyyam is a ritualistic performance, primarily done by Scheduled Caste communities based in the districts of Kasargod, Kannur and some regions in Kozhikode in northern Kerala. Rooted in faith and a form of worship, this ritual involves a performer, usually male, going into a trance, dancing as if possessed, and thereby transforming into a deity.
